How to Use Make Up to Stay Ahead of Your Peers

As a young woman, you’re probably going through a lot of changes both physically and emotionally. When you get to the age that all of your friends start wearing make up, chances are that you want to try it out too. Here are some tips to keep in mind to help your makeup look perfect, so that you can ‘compete’ with other girls wearing make up around you.

The first thing you need to do is find things about your face and your features that you really like. Not only is this an exercise in positivity and a confidence booster, but it will also help you determine areas you want to highlight during your make up routine. Say that you really love your lips. If that’s the case, then you’re going to want to add a bold lip color to your make up routine to play that up!

Before you even put on any make up, you need to be sure you have an excellent skin care routine. Breakouts can be a major bummer and it makes your makeup more difficult to put on correctly. Invest in some skin care products for your skin type – oily, dry or combination – and begin to use them regularly morning and night and you’ll start to see a serious difference in how you look.

Play with colors. Being playful and fun with your make up routine is half of the fun when it comes to wearing makeup! Adding a colored eye shadow or eyeliner to the mix can help you to stand out and look beautiful, but you need to be careful. The colors you pick need to be flattering for your eye color and skin tone, and you don’t want to over do it, otherwise you run the risk of looking downright silly in front of your friends.

Try out new products. But don’t just buy any cheap dollar store make up item. Do some reading and ask your friends about the different types of make up they recommend and even look through some magazines to get new ideas for make up items to try. If you can, going to the make up counter at a department store is another way to find new make up items to try out. And if you can, get a small or sample size of the product so you’re not investing a lot of money into a product you’re not completely confident in yet.

Make sure that your hair is also looking great. Even if you’ve done a super fabulous job with your make up look, if your hair is a frizzy, awful mess then it’s really going to detract from the overall look. Try to work with your hair’s natural texture – instead of against it – as that tends to be a losing battle anyway. Keep it simple and wear it down, or experiment with different updos or even try out some different hair accessories like barrettes, headbands, jewels and other stylish add-ons.

But the biggest thing? Try your best to be confident in who you are!
