When you’re getting a manicure, you want to make sure you look your best – whether it’s a manicure you’re doing yourself at home, or it’s being done professionally in a salon. Your nails are one of the first things a person will see when they see you at a party, meeting, or even out on the street, so you want to make a good impression. But picking the right kind of nail polish color, and the right design to go with it can be really challenging. Especially if you’re big into your nail polish collection, or you went into the salon and see the entire wall full of nail polish colors, it can be a daunting task. Here are some things to keep in mind that will help you select the right color and design for your next manicure.

  • Think about why you’re getting a manicure in the first place.

Is it just a normal part of your beauty upkeep routine, or is there another reason? Maybe a special event or occasion coming up that you need to get dressed up for? Either way, this will impact the nail color and design you choose.

  • You need to think about the setting – is it casual or formal?

The last thing you want to do is get a bright neon colored manicure with jewels, for a demure dinner with your in-laws or a business meeting. If it’s a toned down and formal event, opt for neutral tones with classic designs. If you are able to be a bit more daring, get brighter colors and a nail art design.

  • What colors look best on you?

Not everyone is a color expert, but if you can narrow down what shades look best with your complexion and skin tone, those should be incorporated into your manicure choices. Do you look fabulous in green, and crummy in purple? Then you should opt for a shade of green and avoid purple manicures. You also want to make sure that the colors you choose go with your wardrobe and personal style. Sure, trying new things is always a fun idea, but if you wear a lot of neutrals and would never step out of the house wearing bright colors, then you may want to stay away from them with your manicure, depending on what you’re trying to accomplish.

  • Price should also be a factor.

If you’re getting your nails done in a salon, a manicure could be costly, depending on what you get. Gel manicures are more expensive, but they will last longer. And nail designs usually up your style level when it comes to manicures, but they do add an additional cost that you need to be aware of. Manicurists usually have samples of the nail designs that they offer, so look through the ones you like and ask the manicurist first about the price before you select one, to make sure it’s in your budget.

So figure out the right place, what looks good on you, what you can afford, and you will get a gorgeous manicure right for you!
