Having well groomed hands are an important part of looking your best. If you don’t have the time or funds to go to the salon regularly for a manicure, then you can actually give yourself a high quality manicure at home. Here are the steps you need to take, in order to make sure you give yourself the perfect manicure.

Before putting on any polish, you need to start by properly preparing your hands for a manicure. First, wash your hands with soap and water, using a nailbrush to make sure they are completely clean. You’ll also need to soak your hands and fingers in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes. This will actually soften up the cuticles and nails and make them easier to work with. Make sure that you also dry your hands thoroughly.

Once you’ve dried your hands, the next step to get that perfect manicure is working on your cuticles. You may not realize this, but handling your cuticles is actually the hardest part of doing your nails at home. Your cuticles are a thin layer of dead skin that you’ll find growing over the top of your nails. If you want to make sure that you get a manicure with a clean and nice look, you do need to manage your cuticles. In order to handle them, use a cuticle pusher to push the cuticles down toward the bottom of your nail. Soaking your hands in the warm water beforehand will help to make it easier to push down the cuticles, but be careful that you don’t push too hard.

After finishing your cuticles, you need to clip your nails and shape them the way you like. There are several different tools you can use to shape and cut your nails – including a nail clipper, scissors or even a nail nipper. When you finish clipping your nails to the desired length, then you need to buff them and help them to look their best. Take a nail file and file around the edges of your nails. A lot of people thinking filing back and forth works best, but it’s actually better to do the filing in one stroking motion.

Grab a 3-sided nail buffer and use each of the sides – from coarse to fine – and use it to buff the top of your nails, not the edges. This gives your nails a smooth surface for you to work with, and give you a great manicure, by removing any imperfections and ridges on your nail.

Then you’re ready to give yourself a great manicure. Using a basecoat, a high quality polish, and a topcoat when getting to the painting piece of your manicure are important steps. It will help the color go on smoothly and more vibrantly, and to last longer before it chips and cracks. Once your nail polish is completely dry, make sure you make a regular effort to moisturize your hands, so that they look their best. This should also be done before applying nail polish, after soaking your hands in the warm water.
